  2. Harissa Roasted Carrots with Preserved Lemons and Feta (Gluten-free w/ Vegan-Option)

    Harissa Roasted Carrots with Preserved Lemons and Feta (Gluten-free w/ Vegan-Option)

    African food isn’t something I have a lot of experience with, but after making a batch of preserved lemons recently, I have been dreaming up some tasty and creative ways to use them. Being a traditional Moroccan staple food, it felt right to pair them with the harissa.

    Harissa is a bit spicy and it has such a robust and full flavor. So much more than your run-of-the-mill pepper blend. Harissa comes in paste form or as a dried blend, for this recipe I used a dry blend, but you could certainly use a paste, you may want a tad bit more, but use your judgement.   3. Grain-free Cranberry-Orange Spice Mini Tarts {Gluten-free and Vegan}

    Cranberry-Orange Spice Mini Tarts - Gluten-free & Vegan

    Since I pulled together the massive recipe round-up list for Thanksgiving this year, I haven’t been super focus on creating recipes for the holiday, since I knew you guys were more than set, but I have just been so inspired by the season and I have been having a lot of fun with the flavors.

    Cranberry-Orange Spice Mini Tarts - Gluten-free & Vegan

    I love coming up with creative and healthy ways to enjoy the flavors of the season. I prefer to make recipes that everyone will enjoy, no matter if they have allergies or intolerances or not, while still accommodating my own personal dietary restrictions. These tarts do just that. They would be a lovely dessert at Thanksgiving or any other holiday gathering. The tart shells have the perfect texture to them, the creamy rich cashew layer is reminiscent of cream cheese and the spiced cranberry orange topping is what holiday dreams are made of. The smell of it simmering is almost as good as how it actually tastes.  Read the rest of this entry »

  5. Mini Caramel Apple Pies with Cinnamon Streusel {gluten-free, vegan}

    Mini Caramel Apple Pies with Cinnamon Streusel {gluten-free, vegan}

    In case you haven’t noticed, I have a thing for mini stuff! Why make a single large-sized pie, when you can have 12 tiny ones? I am not sure where or when this love affair began, but I constantly find myself opting for littler things over the traditional size. (spoiler alert: I have another mini dessert coming to the website later this week)

    When Attune Foods contacted me to develop a holiday-worthy dessert recipe using one of their Erewhon Supergrain cereals, I was excited for the challenge of recreating a classic sweet treat, like apple pie. I opted for mini apple pies with a deliciously simple crust and filling, a crunchy spiced streusel topping made with the buckwheat hemp cereal, all topped with a drizzle of my very easy-to-make vegan caramel sauce.

  7. Cranberry Kale Smoothie {Gluten-free, Vegan and Sugar-free}

    Cranberry Kale Smoothie {Gluten-free and Vegan}

    Most of the time, as of late, I am struggling to believe it’s mid-November. Sure the calendar says so, there are lots of holiday decorations at the stores, I even saw the pictures from the first snow my family and friends got earlier in the week in NY. But, being my first year here in Southern California – the excessive sunshine and warmer temperatures are making it really hard for me to believe we are just a few weeks out from Thanksgiving. I have been a tad concerned that it would be hard to get into the holidays this year, with this new drastic change in lifestyle and scenery.

    Fall in SoCal

    On my run to the beach yesterday morning, I passed by a home with a huge tree with beautifully vibrant leaves, falling so haphazardly all over their yard. The tree was more bare than not. I was mid-run and had a really great stride going, but I had to stop and take it all in. Snap a photo or two. It’s the little things in life, this like, that I may have once took for granted, that can now literally stop me dead in my tracks, leaving me with an immense amount of gratitude. I wonder how many people pass that very tree in a day, not realizing just how special it is. It is maybe one of just a few trees like it in our entire neighborhood. Only the second that has caught my attention.

  8. MightyNest Giveaway: Holiday Entertaining? Skip the Paper Plates, Opt for Duralex Glass Dinnerware

    With the holidays nearly upon us, I am so excited to be pairing up with some wonderful and mindful brands to bring you lots of great product features and giveaways from now up until Christmas! I have some amazing gift guides planned to make holiday gift-giving a bit easier for you this year, but in the holiday spirit of giving, I also wanted to give you guys some good stuff, too!  So, stay tuned throughout this month and next where you will find lots of wonderful goodies!

    Giveaway: Holiday Entertaining? Skip the Paper Plates, Opt for Duralex Glass Dinnerware

    As someone that is slowly taking the steps to rid my life and my home of all useless and unnecessary plastics, disposable products and other wasteful items, I am always taking note of places where I can still make changes. I have gotten rid of almost all of the plastic containers in our home and we now opt for glass whenever possible, so when MightyNest contacted me about creating a post, taking inventory of my kitchen and replacing plastics or other harmful products with glassware from Duralex; instead of storage containers or drinking glasses, which I am set with, I decided their beautiful dinnerware would be the perfect addition to my kitchen.

    Giveaway: Holiday Entertaining? Skip the Paper Plates, Opt for Duralex Glass Dinnerware

    My husband and I just relocated to Southern California earlier this year and one of the things I was most excited about when we got into our new home here, was all the room we have to entertain. We have a big deck off of the house that is perfect for hosting dinner parties. Not only did we not have a deck at our home in NY, but we didn’t have a dining room table or even a kitchen table, for that matter. We had a small town house and our kitchen was long and narrow, no room for a table, so we just had a long bar. It just simply wasn’t conducive to entertaining. After living there nearly 10 years, our kitchenware reflected that fact. We had enough plates and bowls to have another couple over, maybe two, but hopefully not everyone would want their salad in a bowl! Read the rest of this entry »

  9. 99 Gluten-free Thanksgiving Recipes

    99 Gluten-free Thanksgiving Recipes

    For even MORE gluten-free Thanksgiving recipes, be sure to check out the follow-up post to this
    99 MORE Gluten-free Thanksgiving Recipes.

    Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on our gratitude. To take time to appreciate all that we have. This month I have been participating in a 21-Day Gratitude Meditation Series. Each morning I wake up and I dedicate a set amount of time before I start my day, to reflect on the gratitude I have for my life and those that are a part of it. It has been a wonderful journey and I don’t let a day pass by that I don’t recognize what a gift each and every moment truly is.

    OK but let’s be really real and totally honest, Thanksgiving is also ALL about FOOD! Delicious, yummy, satisfying, comforting food! Rather than share a bunch of new recipes throughout this month, I thought I would take some time to pull together some of my all-time favorite Thanksgiving recipes, from here on TY and from some of my favorite bloggers. Some I have made before, some are on my menu for this year and some on my fantasy menu (if only I could have a skilled team of chefs to help me prepare an 11-course meal)!

    Here is a list of some great gluten-free Thanksgiving recipes, sure to please everyone at your celebration. There is a little bit on something for all. Some of the traditional classics you’ve come to know at your holiday feasts, some lightened up and extra healthy dishes.  Some covered in cheese, some are literally just vegetables. Whatever your preferences are, I do hope that this list of Gluten-free recipes will help you plan your best Thanksgiving, yet!

    Whether you are gluten-free yourself, or hosting a guest who is gluten-free this Thanksgiving, check out my tips on entertaining – How to be an Accommodating Host and a Gracious Guest. And please, if this is your first holiday season gluten-free, be sure to check out my Quick Guide to Gluten-Free, so you can be mindful and aware of all the unsuspecting places gluten could be hiding.

    And now the good stuff – I’ve got 99 Recipes and Gluten Ain’t One. (sorry had to)

  10. Vegan Pumpkin Pie Martini – Gluten-free and Refined Sugar-free

    Vegan Pumpkin Pie Martini

    I will keep this one short, yesterday’s post was enough words to read for the next week. Phew! What can I say, sometimes I just have stuff I wanna chat about. Thanks so much for being here to read it and all the rest of my ramblings!

    I originally was only going to be sharing this recipe with my email list. An exclusive content kinda thing. But, I just can’t keep this from you guys and I am a little bit of a sucker. Many of you asked if you could still get the recipe even if you aren’t on my mailing list so I decided rules are meant to be broken, even if they are your own.

    Too many people hate emails lists and I kinda don’t blame you. My inbox is a hot mess most days. If you are a busy person and you have a lot of stuff coming and going from your email everyday, adding one more could just be the tipping point. I don’t ever want to annoy you, my friends. So, for those of you that don’t want to mess with emails, I didn’t want you guys to feel left out. I don’t like holding out on you guys and this one is way too yummy to not be shared with the masses. So here ya go – enjoy this, share it and make it part of your holidays this year.

  11. Grain-free Coconut Pumpkin Mini-Loaves with Cocoa Nibs – Gluten-free & Dairy-free

    Grain-free Coconut Pumpkin Mini-Loaves with Cocoa Nibs - Gluten-free and Dairy-free

    I could use this entire post to talk all about pumpkin and how adorable mini-foods are, but why? I know that you guys are aware how much both rock, already. I don’t have to tell you. I wanna talk about friends!!

    I am not sure exactly why it took me until my 30’s to really and truly understand and appreciate good girl friends. Likely my own insecurities were the culprit. The destroyer of many great things in my late teens/early twenties. I am not one of those girls with a collection of girlfriends that have been by my side since high school or college. I have changed a lot since those times. A lot. I actually feel like a completely different person from that one. Totally cliché to say, but I honestly feel that.

    When I look back at the most important friendships from those different points in my life, as much as I am able to look back with fondness at the fun and the memorable moments we shared, I also know why we slowly drifted apart. I am truly not mad about it, nor do I hold any resentment. The relationships served their important purpose for me, they are part of what shaped be to who I am, I learned what I was meant to learn and not a one of them ended on a bad note. Just a slow drift on down the road of life.

    People change and forcing them where they don’t fit, doesn’t accomplish anything for anyone. At least that’s always been my experience in my life. The easiest and best things in life don’t have to be forced. Easily, I can say my two best girlfriends in the whole world are my sister Vicky and my cousin Andrea. Both have been in my life forever, obviously, and they know me better than just about anyone. I could spend unlimited time with either one and it would feel like no time has passed at all. Both have seen me at my best and at my worst and love me regardless. I obviously feel the same for them. I never feel forced to be with them, hands down – the easiest friendships I have.

    Grain-free Coconut Pumpkin Mini-Loaves with Cocoa Nibs - Gluten-free and Dairy-free

    As most of you know, my life took a huge change in recent times, as we have uprooted our lives and moved across the country earlier this year. With this drastic move, came many huge shifts in various areas of my life. In light of these changes, I have spent a lot of time recently reflecting on friendships. New and old. Close and distant. It’s interesting to me that some of the people I feel the most connected with, live so far away that I couldn’t even get into the car and drive to them, if I wanted. Some were an instant connection when we first met, flourishing and growing at an amazing pace, all through text messaging and Skyping.  Many, we haven’t seen each other in months or in some cases years. Some friends are so open and honest with me, I find myself wanting to tell them everything, no matter how long we’ve known each other. Others relationships are so new that there is still so much we don’t even know about each other, but every time we are together we learn even more.

    It’s fun and strange to feel yourself entering these new chapters of your life. Seeing old doors close and new doors open. Regardless of the exact point on a timeline that each of these friendships lie in, I feel an immense amount of gratitude for each and every one. Read the rest of this entry »

  12. Pumpkin Roundup from Sarah Bakes Gluten Free Treats

    Sarah Bakes Gluten Free Treats Pumpkin Round Up

    Pumpkin season, I mean Fall, is my favorite season of the year! The crisp air outside, the leaves changing colors, and the abundance of pumpkin goodies coming out of my kitchen. It warms my heart to bake up a batch of pumpkin cookies or a loaf of warm pumpkin bread. The smell alone gets me every time, but it is that glorious pumpkin flavor that just can’t get enough of!

    Sarah Bakes Gluten Free Treats Pumpkin Round Up
    My name is Sarah and I’m the baker/blogger over at Sarah Bakes Gluten Free Treats. I’ve had a love for baking for as long as I can remember and for the past 3 years, I’ve been baking 100% gluten free! My husband has celiac disease and my son and I both have a gluten allergy. A lot of my baking is also dairy and egg free. It was quite the adventure, learning how to transition over to gluten free baking. There have been highs and lows, but it has been an amazing journey. Beth has invited me to share a few of my favorite gluten free vegan pumpkin recipes with you today. I hope you enjoy!

    You can check out Beth’s pumpkin recipe round up post over on my site here.

  14. Autumn Harvest Salad with Horseradish Vinaigrette – Gluten-free + Vegan

    Autumn Harvest Salad with Horseradish Vinaigrette - Gluten-free + Vegan

    I just cannot seem to get enough veggies lately. Even after the 5-day Fall Cleanse where I literally only ate fruits and vegetables, I have just been craving them like crazy. I find, as someone who eats intuitively, that when my body is craving tons of vegetables it is usually for good reason. I enjoy knowing my body well enough to be able to listen to what it needs and to enough to catch the cues that make me aware. It is so easy to misread cravings and to give in to the foods that don’t nourish us. Recognizing you have a craving and it’s for something like Brussels sprouts, that takes some time to get used to and some serious practice in self awareness.

    This past Sunday we had a fall potluck dinner at our place with friends and we had lots of different fun fall foods. Of course, with cooler weather comes the comfort food, so we had hearty helpings like gluten-free mac and cheese, gluten-free stuffing (I did a quick lesson on making gluten-free stuffing for a newly gluten-free friend, Debbie, who wants to make it for Thanksgiving this year. Hence the randomness of this dish), deviled eggs, Mark put chicken wings on the grill for folks (sent all the way from Buffalo), I made my pumpkin hummus, a delicious sweet potato appetizer (that I can’t wait to share with you guys) and lots more. Although it wasn’t all heavy, I did want to make sure we had a delicious healthy and light Autumn-inspired vegetable salad to balance everything out. Consequently, personally this salad, it was also my favorite part of the meal. Read the rest of this entry »

  15. Fall Detox Buddha Bowl with Garlic Turmeric Cashew Cream – Gluten-free + Vegan

    FALLcleanse

    Fall Detox Buddha Bowl with Garlic Turmeric Cashew Cream {GF & V} from Tasty Yummies

    Woo hoo, we did it! It’s day 5 of the 5-Day Fall Cleanse! I am super excited to be sharing this yummy bowl of fall goodness for the final day of this challenge. I am not exactly sure why they call these delicious meals “Buddha Bowls”, but it is something I have seen quite often at restaurants, since moving out here to Southern California. They are always a little different at each place, but the gist of it is this – usually some type of grain at the bottom, brown rice, quinoa or millet (but you can certainly go without) and a great big pile of veggies on top. I’ve seen them with steamed or roasted veggies and raw, as well. Most have avocado and a drizzle of some sort of yummy sauce, over it all. I think what I love about Buddha Bowls is the fact that it’s just a great way to make a hodge podge mess of veggies into a meal and still give it a fancy refined name. A Buddha Bowl, sounds so much nicer than “a fridge cleaning pile of veggies”. It really is a great way to use up those greens before they go bad.

    This week's CSA.
    We got our huge CSA box delivered this week – that’s right our CSA boxes are now being delivered right to our home once a week, how amazing is Southern California? – and I decided even before it came, that I was going to be able to make all kinds of goodness for my 5-Day Cleanse. For whatever reason, I had been dreaming of creating my own Buddha Bowl before my box even arrived this week, so I couldn’t wait to see what was in there waiting for me to work with. I also had half of a butternut squash leftover from my Fall Detox Soup and I just adore the taste of roasted butternut squash, it’s so sweet and delicious. The perfect additional to a fall Buddha bowl, if you ask me. Any other squash would work too, pumpkin, kobocha or even just a sweet potato.

  16. Spiced Apple Smoothie – Gluten-free & Vegan

    FALLcleanse

    Good morning! We are onto day 4 of the 5-Day Fall Cleanse. I am feeling great today! How are you feeling? When Sherrie and I talked about creating this short and simple cleanse, we wanted to be mindful of and gentle on our bodies to soothe our digestive system, instead of disrupting it and upsetting it. We wanted to create a simple plan that would continue to connect us with our food, but while slowly purging the toxins that like to hide out in all the little cracks and crevices. We weren’t looking to shock our systems with anything drastic like a juice-only cleanse, we simply wanted to get back to eating intuitively, to check in with our bodies, to return that conscious awareness back to what our bodies truly need right now, to reset any bad habits and get ready for the seasonal changes that lie ahead.

    Cleansing and detoxifying can be quite challenging and difficult depending on your mental state at the time. It can not only bring on physical symptoms of the cleansing, but often times it can bring emotional imbalances to the surfaces, as well. I have cleansed in the past when I wasn’t quite ready for the full extent of it all and it wasn’t pretty. I simply felt deprived or left out the entire time, even angry at myself for choosing to do something so limiting and challenging to my own self. It is with so much gratitude this time, that I can honestly say the experience this time has been peaceful, to say the least. I honestly was worried that I would experience some amount of side effects/detoxing symptoms with how I had been eating leading up to this cleanse, but with how good I am feeling throughout this process, I think I can thank my general everyday clean diet for that. I possibly don’t give myself enough credit. With eating a clean diet, at least 95% of the time, it is easy for me to focus on the 5% when I am not at my best and beat myself up for it. I can tend to do that sort of thing, I am hard on myself. This cleanse has been a gentle reminder that I have been quite good to my body and that I want to continue to be as good or better to it. There truly is no greater reward than feeling good!

    Spiced Apple Smoothie - Gluten-free + Vegan

    On the evening on day 2, I did experience some minor sweet cravings and Sherrie made the suggestion of  stuffing a few dates with coconut oil, so I did just that and added some shredded unsweetened coconut on top. It felt like I was cheating. It was so delicious and rich. The next morning, I was looking for something a bit more substantial than a juice so I made this simple smoothie for breakfast. It really set the tone for my amazing day yesterday and it was perfect given the beautiful Autumn day that it was here in Southern California.

  17. Fall Detox Soup – Gluten-free + Vegan

    FALLcleanse
    Fall Detox Soup - Gluten-free + Vegan

    It’s day 3 of the 5-Day Fall Cleanse, which means we are past the halfway point. I hope you have been following along with Sherrie and I are on Facebook  and Instagram pages (links below) where we are sharing every single thing we are eating. I actually wish I had it in my schedule to do this cleanse for longer, I am truly enjoying it. Since I don’t, that just means I will go forward eating more mindfully again, which is one of the main reasons I love a cleanse. It resets everything, it gets me back to being focused and aware, listing to my body and eating intuitively. It is the the best way for me, that I have found to stop bad habits in their tracks and get back to feeling my best.

    My favorite thing about a cleanse in the cooler months, is being able to make a huge pot of soup to enjoy throughout the cleanse. It makes mealtime easy and stress-free. It guarantees that I always have something healthy to choose from and it keeps me from making any crazy decisions.

    Fall Detox Soup - Gluten-free + Vegan

    This particular soup is filled with the best of what is in season right now. If some of these ingredients aren’t available near you, improvise with what you do have. This soup was literally inspired by what we had left from our last CSA box (we get our next box later today) and what looked best at the market. Read the rest of this entry »

  18. Fall Cleanse Green Juice

    FALLcleanseFall Cleanse Green Juice

    Onto day 2 of the 5-Day Fall Cleanse and I am feeling great! I really did need this little reset both physically and mentally. This juice was actually breakfast for day 1, yesterday. I should really call it, “Fridge Cleaning Juice” or “I am surprised to find anything healthy in the fridge with all the leftovers, wine and hard cider, juice”. It was a busy weekend and my fridge showed it. Saturday, we drove down to San Diego for the Gluten-free Oktoberfest, which was amazing! Sunday, we had a fun little late-day lunch with some of my favorite gluten-free girls Meg from Beard and Bonnet, Gina from So…Let’s Hang Out and Cara from Fork and Beans, plus Meg’s friend Amber was visiting from Georgia, too. Such a fun afternoon. I laughed so hard, we ate so well, cocktails were had and then just like that, they were all gone and I was sad. I seriously don’t know if I have ever hung out with that many ladies at once, that I had so much in common with.

  21. 5-Day Fall Cleanse

    Your body is an incredible thing. It is built to naturally detoxify itself every day. By detoxing, we eliminate and neutralize the toxins in our bodies through our skin, lungs, lymph, liver and kidneys. We are exposed to so many heavy environmental toxins these days, from the air we breathe to the water we drink. Treating yourself to a gentle detox, supported by nutrient dense foods, every once in a while is a great way to give your body a break and support its natural self-cleaning system.

    Fall is a great time to cleanse. For Sherrie and I, it is the perfect time. For us, like most people, our summers were filled with indulgent eats + drinks and now our bodies are tired and ready to be re-energized! Fall is a natural time of transition. Cleansing in the fall will prep your body for the harsh winter months by strengthening your immunity, boosting your mood and potentially shedding excess weight before the holidays.

    As health and wellness bloggers, our readers often ask us if we cleanse and if so, how we do it. There are so many different cleanses out there and the information can be overwhelming for sure. But it doesn’t have to be complicated. Together we’ve developed this 5 Day Cleanse that is gentle on your body and easy to stick with. Below is all the information you’ll need to get your cleanse started. Although Sherrie is a Certified Health Coach, we would like to remind you that we are not registered nutritionists or doctors and this plan is simply what works best for us. We urge you to do what’s best for you and your body. Listen to it and honor it. This cleanse is not about deprivation. If something doesn’t feel right, we encourage you to restore your balance and make the necessary dietary changes to do so.

    All week long we’ll be bringing you green juice and smoothie recipes, detoxing vegetable soups, seasonal plant-based dishes + more! So check back often, between the two of us there will be plenty of recipes to keep your belly full and your mind motivated. We’ll be documenting our eats + drinks all week, so if you haven’t already, get connected with our social media sites now! Later today we will be sharing a shopping list full of ideas to get you started and prepared for the next 5 days so, keep an eye out for that. Below you will find our guide for this 5-day cleanse, including what we will be eating and what we are avoiding.
