The Other Side of Beth

Besides cooking, I rarely share with you the other major love of my life, design. My husband and I work for ourselves and we run, Hero Design Studio. We specialize in hand crafted design, illustration and print making. In addition to created limited edition posters for bands and cultural institutions, we also have an extensive line of our own products, from art prints to greeting cards to t-shirts, all hand silkscreen printed, by us in our home-based studio. So,when I’m not in the kitchen creating, I’m creating somewhere else. We both feel quite fortunate to do what we love every single day, with the person we love more than anything. I wake up every single day feeling blessed to have a life full of passion.

I honestly could carry on and talk about what we do and the love we have for our work, all day long, I think this is partially why I love cooking and keeping this blog so much, it’s a great way for me to escape that part of my brain and my emotions for a while and it allows me to create, but a completely different way.

There are obviously many similarities and crossovers between my design career and my love of cooking, baking and blogging about it, some of which you can see visually, like the kitchen and cooking related art prints I have created for our product line. I decided, even though it feels a bit like an advertisement, to share with you a sale we have going right now on Fab.com. It features some of the cooking and food related prints I’ve created, so I thought some of you maybe interested. For those of you that just want recipes and food stuff, sorry for this post 😉

at risk of sounding like a weirdo, i wanted to let you know that your shop on allen was the reason i moved to buffalo. or rather, the reason i became OK with moving to buffalo. i came up here to look at apartments before starting grad school in 2009 and i spent most of the week-end crying at the thought of having to move to amherst (yech) or a really awful slumlord style apartment (unfortunately, too many of these in town). on my last night in town, i stopped in your shop and it reminded me of home (berkeley, ca). i chatted with some people in the shop about all kinds of stuff and i felt really welcome and happy and finally decided that maybe i could live here. 2.5 years later, i’m in allentown and loving it, but missing your presence on allen. and allen st. seems to be losing business to elsewhere (hertel? i miss modern nostalgia). anyway, i love your blog and am so appreciative of your writing it. all the best to you!

Wow Katy! You completely just made my whole week. What a super amazing comment to wake up to 😉 You have no idea how much it means to hear that our store had such an impact on you. We really loved that time in our lives and have such fond memories of meeting wonderful people, like you, and being able to talk about what we love every single day. We definitely miss having the store and that interaction, but with our client work and traveling becoming so much more of a priority we definitely made the right decision at the right time. I think not having the store is really going to hit me at the holidays, that was my favorite time of year. Everyone was always so happy and excited to be out shopping. I agree with you, Allen definitely has a different vibe these days. It’s such a great neighborhood and we really saw a ton of potential there, but it just doesn’t seem to have the foot traffic and support the other neighborhoods do right now. It’s such a shame, there is so much culture and personality there.

Thanks again Katy, your comment means the world to me, really! I am so glad you found me on here!
